Spicy Fried Chicken at Prince's Hot Chicken Shack in Nashville
As luck would have it, the hotel I was staying at in Nashville was right around the corner and in walking distance to some of the best (and unique) fried chicken in the country. And it was a good thing I walked because Prince's is so popular you will have a hard time finding a place to park.
Prince's is pretty famous, so I was going to check it out while I was in Nashville even if I had to work out the parking situation. It's been on many TV shows and in lots of foodie books. Most recently, Anthony Bourdain gave it a try.
So what's so good about it? The spicy heat gets into the fried chicken without making it into a soggy mess. Yes, it's messy to eat (have lots of napkins on hand) but the fried batter holds up to the hot oil. The spice gets into the chicken meat and every bite is a delight.
There are several variations of heat which you can order, from plain to XXXHOT. I tried the mild which was plenty hot! I asked a few people in line with me (yes, of course there is a line) which spice level they preferred, and several regulars said the mild was enough. I'm glad I got it. It was really delicious, and plenty hot enough.
Enjoy a slice of sweet potato pie while you're waiting. We also had a piece of red velvet cake.
It's not only great food, but it's a lot of fun to visit. Everyone there knows how good the food is and it's a lively atmosphere. Just leave some time to find a parking space!
And remember -- it's cash only!!
Hours and menu items are listed on Prince's Hot Chicken Shack's Facebook page.
