British Grub at Horse Brass Pub in Portland, Oregon

Horse Brass Pub in Portland, Oregon
We arrived in Portland for a week of eating and scenery. For our first dinner, we had British pub grub at Horse Brass Pub. Read my full review with pictures after the break.

Horse Brass Pub is on Belmont Street in the Sunnyside district of Portland. Despite the calendar showing mid-February, the weather was beautifully clear and in the mid-60s. After our long drive from the Bay Area, a pint at a pub sounded perfect.

Horst Brass Pub is a fun place. It's pretty big, with a long bar, and several dart boards. It's decorated with pictures and mementos giving it the feel of a pub. I've been to a few pubs in London, and other than the American accents, Horse Brass Pub feels like a pretty authentic British pub. I found out about Horse Brass Pub on Esquire's Best Bars in America. It's also been on Travel Channel's Food Paradise.

There are many British and local beers on tap and in bottles. There's a good selection of whiskeys, too.

There are plenty of tables and benches. Seat yourself.

Fish and chips at Horse Brass Pub

We tried the fish and chips. This is a pub, after all, so we wanted to try it out even if it's the typical thing to do. And it was very good. The batter had a distinct texture and taste, and didn't simply blend into the fish. My wife tries fish and chips wherever she can, and she thinks this is one of the best she's had. These were halibut, and that makes all the difference.

The fish & chips at Horse Brass Pub are on my list of Best Portland Fish & Chips.

It came with a side salad. I remember from my trip last year to Eugene that all the veggies in Oregon are super fresh, and they make a boring side salad really pop out. This one was no exception.

The special for Saturday night was Bangers and Mash. It was very good. The sausage were crisp, the peas were fresh, and the potatoes had just the right amount of garlic in them.

The servers are friendly and knowledgable about the menu and beer selection.

We enjoyed our dinner at Horse Brass Pub and recommend it when you're in the mood for beer and British pub grub. Horse Brass Pub is like a traditional British Pub. (Read my review of Stirling Bridges in Sacramento which is more of a kicked-up version of a British pub.)

I found Horse Brass Pub in Walking Portland, an excellent book with many historic and interesting walks in Portland.
