Ramona Cafe in Ramona, CA near San Diego |
Not too far outside of San Diego is the old town of
Ramona. Once full dairies and even a boxing training camp, now its known more for its thoroughbred horses. On its old-fashioned, rustic main street is Ramona Cafe. Read my full review with pictures after the break.
Ramona Cafe has been written up a lot (
here's a great post) and as seen on
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri on Food Network and also in Guy's book (and in
RoadFood -- another great road trip foodie book):

Half-pound blue ribbon cinnamon rolls at Ramona Cafe |
Ramona Cafe is known for its huge, half-pound cinnamon rolls, which sit in the adjoining bakery for sale along with other goodies. But we arrived for dinner, and by the time we were done, there was no room for one. And besides, they looked like they were baked in the morning and had sitting around a while.

Chicken Cordon Bleu at Ramona Cafe |
Another signature dish (and the one Guy raved about) is the Chicken cordon bleu. Ramona Cafe changes it from the traditional ham-and-chicken recipe by topping it with hollandaise sauce, and frying it after its been baked.

Inside one of the pieces of Chicken Cordon Bleu at Ramona Cafe |
The portions are very large, and
you get two of pieces. Definitely delicious! And filling.

Chicken fried steak at Ramona Cafe |
I had the chicken-fried steak which is a combination of ground beef and veal. And, like the chicken cordon bleu, it's served as a very large portion. Another delicious dinner!
The dinners come loaded, too: corn, corn bread, soup or salad, and potatoes (baked, mashed, or fries).
Next time I'd like to try Ramona's breakfast, and get the giant cinnamon roll when it's hot and fresh.
