Chicken and waffles is a popular dish any time of the day, but chicken and donuts? Read my review of the fried chicken and cake donuts at Federal Donuts in Philadelphia after the break.

Federal Donuts is my daughter's favorite donut place in Philly, and probably of all time (and she's sampled plenty of donuts in Portland so that's really saying something).

The fried chicken at Federal Donuts can be had either as a half or full order, and all orders come with a honey donut. You can pick from six flavors. We got two half orders: chili garlic (her favorite) and honey ginger.

The fried chicken is really good. The batter is fried very thin and crispy, with plenty of flavor. The chili garlic is exceptionally tasty.

There's also glazed and sugar cake donuts at Federal Donuts. Our sugar donuts were fried to order, and arrived at our table warm and delicious. Reminded me a lot of the fried-to-order mini donuts at Pip's in Portland.

So how do donuts go with fried chicken? Really well! It's like getting dessert with your meal. And they're both fried, so there's sort of a flavor connection between the meat and the cake.

I wonder how long before Federal Donuts shows up on a TV foodie show?

TIP: Sound like a local and tell your friends you ate chicken and donuts at Fed Nuts.
