Here and There in Bakersfield

The Big Shoe at 931 Chester Ave. reminds me of the "buildings built to be what they sell" that I saw on Sandy Blvd. in Portland

I spent the weekend in Bakersfield checking out the new places from this season's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on Food Network. Along the way, I checked out a few other things around Bakersfield.

East Bakersfield is known as Old Kern and still has several Basque restaurants, including Wool Growers and Pyrenees Cafe. (Read my review of Pyrenees Cafe)
West of Old Kern is downtown Bakersfield. The Fox Theater is in downtown.
Buena Vista Museum of Natural History and Science is downtown.

Oil is a big part of Bakersfield's economy. There are derricks scattered throughout the town. They are pretty smelly if you get close to them.
Kern River Trail goes many miles from Bakersfield all the way to I-5. It's in excellent condition with hardly any cracks, and there are many people out jogging, walking, and cycling. It runs along the Kern River (which is mostly dry), downtown, and California State University at Bakersfield.
Haggin Oaks Sunday farmer's market across the street from The Marketplace at the Kaiser Permanente parking lot.
The new Guy Fieri restaurant Johnny Garlic's still has lines out the door.
California Living Museum has a zoo, tram ride, and museum all gear toward kids. Plenty of families enjoy this visit a few miles outside of downtown Bakersfield.
