The cool sweetness of coleslaw can provide a balance to the spicy heat of chili, and that's exactly what it does on the chili burgers and dogs at Brooks' Sandwich house. Read my review of the Chili Coleslaw Burger at Brooks' Sandwich House in Charlotte, North Carolina as seen on Burger Land with George Motz after the break.

I found out about Brook's on the Carolina Style Burgers episode of Burger Land. Brooks' Sandwich House has been around since the 1970s, and it looks even older than that. You might drive by it thinking it was just an old shack, but be sure to stop and try their burger or dog with chili and coleslaw.

The way it works at Brooks' is, you walk inside to order. Mostly it's just the kitchen with big pots of chili bubbling away, and a small counter where you order and wait for lunch. Then you can take it home, sit in your car, or stand at the covered bench outside. Reminds me a lot of Tommy's Burgers back in Los Angeles.

But the chili at Brooks' has Tommy's beat hands-down (and the chili at Tommy's is really good). The chili at Brooks' is so meaty it's almost like a meat paste. There's hardly any red tomato color at all; it's just brown meat. And it's got some heat, too. You need to ask for the chili to be added to your hot dog or hamburger, and be sure to do that.

The burger patty is griddle-fried very crisp and well done. Just the way I like it.

You also need to ask for the coleslaw, and it makes a wonderful addition to cool down the spicy chili.

The hot dog has a smoky, hickory flavor. Like the burger, the hot dog is delicious.

Brooks' is a bargain too -- no gourmet fast casual prices here.

Next time I want to try the breakfast at Brooks'. If it's anything as good as their lunch, it must be amazing.

TIP: It's cash only at Brooks'!
