Juanita's Taco Shop in Encinitas, CA (near San Diego) |
I finally got to try a California burrito. Does replacing the rice and beans with french fries make a difference? Yes, it does! Read my full review with pictures after the break.
I found Juanita's Taco Shop in
this article from the Phoenix NewTimes blog while searching for a California burrito. I'd never had one, so now was the time! We were headed back after
our trip to San Diego, and we wanted to get one from the region that invented them. It was early in the morning, and we were still finishing our
escamochas from Senor Mango's, so we decided to get our burritos to go.

Fishing for tacos (mural inside Juanita's Taco Shop) |
Juanita's is right off the freeway in Encinitas, California (just half an hour north of San Diego). It's not far from the beach. There's plenty of seating inside.

California burrito at Juanita's Taco Shop in Encinitas |
A
California burrito takes out the beans and rice, and replaces them with fries. Awesome! I don't like beans and rice in my burritos that much anyway, and adding fries makes it sort of like a breakfast burrito. And the carne asada at Juanita's is crisp and delicious (which
seems to be the case in San Diego). The California burrito also has sour cream and cheese.

Arizona burrito at Juanita's Taco Shop in Encinitas |
Juanita's also has the
Arizona burrito. It's like the California burrito, but swaps out the the sour cream and cheese for guacamole and salsa fresca. I actually liked the Arizona better than the California, and I liked the California a lot!

Juanita's gives you plenty of salsa to go |
Juanita's opens early and next time I will try their breakfast burrito. If it's anything like the ones I had, it must be amazing!
And of course, Juanita's serves tacos and plenty of other kinds of burritos.
TIP: Get there early and enjoy a breakfast burrito.
STEVE SAYS: Meaty, delicious burritos and easy to find when driving to San Diego.
