I am in Tucson for a few days, and I had to check out the Sonoran hot dogs featured in Food Wars on Travel Channel. See my full review and pictures after the break.

What's a Sonoran dog, you ask? Here's a recipe but in a nutshell it's a hot dog wrapped in bacon, fried on a grill, then covered in pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, and jalapeño sauce. Any wonder it's sometimes called a Mexican hot dog? The bun is soft like a hot dog bun, but it's shaped in one piece like pouch.

Food Wars on Travel Channel featured the Sonoran dog on one of it's episode. Check out this video on Travel Channel.

My first stop was at El Guero Canelo in Tucson. This is a festive place, with lots of indoor benches and some outside, too. Plenty of parking and there's a huge mural in the parking lot.

The Sonoran dog at El Guero Canelo is really good. All the condiments work together to make a snappy dog, but it's not as spicy as you might expect.

Today's special was a mango smoothie so I had to try it. Wow, was this unique. Not sure what the red sauce at the bottom was, but the mangos were fresh and delicious. Some spice was thrown over the top, too.

Next stop: the Sonoran dog at BK Carne Asada, and see who wins the Food War!

Read my review of the other Sonoran dog, and tell me which one you think is better in the comments below.
