Tempeh bowl at Toad Hollow in Covington, Louisiana

I've been looking for vegetarian and vegan places lately, and I especially like to find a place that also serves healthy dishes with meat so that everyone at the table can find something they like. I'll be in New Orleans next week, but I'm just north for a few days. Read all about the vegan tempeh bowl at Toad Hollow in Covington, Louisiana after the break.

There were a couple of vegan dishes on the menu at Toad Hollow which caught my eye, and the friendly waitress helped me pick the tofu bowl. The combination of warm tempeh over a bed of cold greens sounded perfect for lunch on a warm day. The organic tempeh (like tofu except made from the entire soy bean) is marinated in tamari (sort of a less-salty soy sauce), garlic, ginger and sesame oil and then pan-seared and covered with sesame seeds. The tempeh is served over romaine lettuce, carrots, scallions, and avocado with a helping to brown basmati rice.

I really enjoyed this! The tempeh was full of flavor without being too salty. The bed of greens were fresh and full of flavor. And there was plenty of it. The large bowl was full to the top and I left very full.

Toad Hollow also has patio seating, and plenty of art on the walls. There's a bar, too.

After lunch, be sure to take a stroll through historic downtown Covington. You can find out about its history and what to see in this helpful book of walks and eats called Walking New Orleans which you can get on Amazon --

Check the Toad Hollow web site for their days and hours, and the Toad Hollow page on Facebook for specials.
