The hot dog is topped with chili sauce at Chris' Hot Dogs in Montgomery, Alabama |
I found Chris' Hot Dogs from Urbanspoon's list of best cheap eats in Montgomery. (I can't believe this place hasn't been on any TV shows yet -- or if it has, I can't find them.)
I knew going in that I wanted the combo, so that I could try both a dog and a burger.
The combo includes a dog, a burger, and fries. I added in sweet tea. |
The hamburger is dressed the same as the hot dog including the chili sauce, and also adds catsup. It's also very good. With all the gourmet and fast casual burgers we have nowadays, it's a real treat to have a really good, fresh, traditional hamburger. And it comes out to your table really quickly, and the entire combo (including fries) costs less than many gourmet burgers.
There's a lot more than the hot dogs and hamburgers, as everyone is very friendly. I hadn't made it two steps through the door before the waiter asked me how I was, where was I from, and so on. Then after a few moments of checking out the menu, the owner (Chris' grandson) sat down, welcomed me, and told me about the history of his restaurant.
Here's what I can remember about the history he told me about Chris' Hot Dogs --
- MLK walked down the street from his church to pick up the daily paper (back in the days when Chris' also sold newspapers and magazines)
- Several presidents have eaten here, including FDR
- It's the oldest restaurant in Montgomery (at 98 years old)
- Largest order they filled was for a presidential rally for George Wallace with 3000 hot dogs
- And my favorite: Hank Williams was sitting at the counter one day when he spotted a cute lady and said to her, "Hey good lookin', whatcha got cookin'?" and the rest is country music history
