Papa's Soul Food Kitchen in Eugene, Oregon |
I went to Papa's Soul Food Kitchen last night in Eugene, OR. It will appear soon on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri.

The smoker |
Papa's started as a cart but is now in a renovated house with a large outside patio as well. There is a big smoker on the side with enticing smoke trailing out the top. Papa's Soul Food smokes pork ribs, beef brisket, and chicken.

Jerked chicken with baked beans and collard greens |
My friends and I tried several items. I had the jerked chicken. It was spicy (duh) and smoky. With the dinner you get a choice of two sides, from which I chose the collard greens (pretty good) and baked beans (very good with bits of smoked meat). The chicken pieces were a little small but the dinner is reasonably priced so I'm not complaining.

Pork ribs with mac & cheese and fried okra |
One friend had the pork ribs and they were delicious. The sauce is a little on the sweet side. She had the fried okra and mac & cheese on the side.

Beef brisket with red beans & rice and corn at Papa's Soul Food |
My other friend had the smoked beef brisket, and that was probably the best dish of the ones we had. Beautiful smoke rings on the meat, tender, and a lot of flavor. He had the red beans & rice with his dinner.
You can also get the meat as a sandwich instead of on a plate.
Some of the other items: fried catfish, smoked chicken (not jerked), fried oyster sandwich.
We had to wait about half an hour, and it was a damp Wednesday night. This is a popular place!
