Take the elevator to the top of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis

View from the top of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis

Built in 1965 with a height of 630 feet, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis is the tallest stainless steel monument in the world. It greets visitors from the west bank of the Mississippi River, but the best part is taking the elevator up to the top. From there, you can look out over the city and far beyond.

The elevator ride itself is a treat. Each elevator pod has a glass doors, so you can see the interior of the arch as you climb to the top.

There's a lot of historical information about the Gateway Arch, as well as many other landmarks in downtown St. Louis, in this great book called A Wandering Walk Guidebook: St. Louis -- Downtown which you can get on Amazon.

Be sure to check out the statues, sculptures, and fountains at nearby Citygarden while you're in downtown St. Louis.
