Steak fingers at Mac's Steak in the Rough in Albuquerque

I'm in Albuquerque, New Mexico trying out the best of the Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail and I drove right by a drive-in that caught my eye. Steak in the rough? What's that? Find out after the jump.

OK, so what's a steak finger? According to Mac's Steak in the Rough web site, steak fingers are "tender slivers of ranch beef cut fresh daily, dipped in our special batter & deep fried." These taste really good. The steak is tender and the batter adds flavor. Dipping them in the gravy is great, or they are good on their own. And they're definitely not something you find at most drive-ins.

The dinner combo also includes gravy for dipping your steak fingers, coleslaw, dinner roll, and fries. And a scallion!

Green chile cheeseburger at Mac's Steak in the Rough in Albuquerque

I had to try the green chile cheeseburger as well. (After all, I'm trying out as many as I can while I'm in New Mexico). It's very good. It has both green and red peppers, along with the mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. It's right up there with the others I've been eating here in Albuquerque.

Mac's Steak in the Rough has plenty of drive-in spaces where you can order right from your car, or you can go inside for the indoors seating. But on a beautiful fall day in the desert, I didn't want to go inside when I could eat outside with my sun roof and windows open.
