Sausage & Tomato Pizza Pie at Papa's Tomato Pies in Trenton

Sausage & Tomato Pizza Pie at Papa's Tomato Pies in Trenton

Started over 100 years ago, inducted into the Pizza Hall of Fame, and delicious! My daughter and I made it to the East Coast from California, and how could we pass up this Trenton treat? We couldn't!

Like the sign says, Papa's is the oldest tomato pie restaurant in the United States. According to 500 Things to Eat Before It's Too Late by Jane and Michael Stern, a tomato pie is thinly-sliced tomatoes on a thin-crust pizza. We added fennel sausage for some extra flavor.

What a delicious pizza this turned out to be. Crispy on the bottom, cheesy and flavorful on top, and the fennel sausage adds just a little spicy kick. Check out this great blog post for everything you ever wanted to know about tomato pies.

We washed down our slices of tomato pie with birch beer and red cream soda. You can't get those everywhere! Papa's also has RC Cola.

We enjoyed fried mozzarella sticks while waiting for our tomato pie.

The staff at Papa's is really friendly. Our waitress made sure we left some room for cannoli for dessert, and I'm glad she did because we can't get an Italian treat this good back in California.

Expect a little bit of a wait. There's seating outside, too. And it's cash only at Papa's!
